Action Day 2012

Cancer Research and its Progress

Awareness Day Thursday October 11th 2012

Every year in October, the Cancer Support Group (CSG) of the Commission organises an Awareness Day centred on a particular health theme.

“Cancer Research and its Progress” is the title of this year’s event which will take place during lunchtime on Thursday 11th October in the Commission’s Berlaymont building.

A series of stands in the Berlaymont Piazza (ground floor) will be attended by representatives from various Belgian based cancer support organisations, who have been invited to provide information and present their work. In addition we have invited a number of representatives of European and international associations who have involvement in cancer research, some with funding from RTD’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), and/or patient quality life.

These include the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), the European Cancer Organisation (ECCO), the European Network for Cancer Research in Children and Adolescents (ENCCA) the National Cancer Insitute (NCI) and the European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS).

Vice President Šefčovič is supporting this event and has kindly agreed to come along and meet the standholders.

We are again taking this opportunity to introduce our visitors to a number of well-being, relaxation practices such as Shiatsu massage, Micro-kiné and Reiki.

Round Table Discussion Thursday October 25th 2012

To enable colleagues to pose direct questions to experts in the field of Cancer Research, the Cancer Support Group is holding a second event during lunch-time on Thursday 25th October in the Commission’s Guimard building. This will take the form of a round table discussion with several panelists from the medical and research worlds who will briefly present their specialist fields and then take questions from the floor. If you wish to know more about the current state of play on cancer research and its progress then sign up via SYSLOG http://www.cc.cec/di/syslog_formation/application/catalogue.cfm?cor_id=402766

Colleagues from other institutions are more than welcome by contacting the Cancer Support Group directly.

2011 Cancer Awareness Day

Every year in October, the Cancer Support Group (CSG) of the Commission organises an Awareness Day centred on a particular health theme.

“Cancer and the Family” is the chosen title of this year’s event on Thursday 6 October from 12.00 – 15.00 in the Berlaymont Piazza.

Information Stands*

A series of stands will be attended by representatives from various cancer organisations who have been invited to provide information and present their work particularly in relation to the support available to family members when someone close to them is diagnosed with cancer. Caring for and supporting someone who is seriously ill is a physically and mentally demanding task and these people often need support as much as the patients.

Children and Parents

When a parent develops cancer, this always has a dramatic impact on a child. We are delighted that our guest Nathalie Slosse of the Talismanneke organization (www.talismanneke.be) will be presenting her book “Grand Arbre est malade” at 13.30.This is a simple children’s story with an important message for adults as to how to help their toddlers cope with serious illness within the family.

On the other hand, cancer in children is a parent’s nightmare and, in this regard, we have invited SIOP (the European Society for Paediatric Oncology), a pan-European organisation dedicated to childhood cancer, and the Belgian asbl “Ensemble Pas à Pas”.

Included amongst our other guest organisations committed to cancer prevention and patient and family support are the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL) who will be displaying the work of their members from 22 countries across Europe, “Vivre Comme Avant” which offers support to breast cancer patients, the Belgian “Fondation contre le Cancer” which operates at a national level, and “We Care”, a Belgium-based English-speaking support group for women with cancer.

Attendees

Professionals from a number of medical establishments in Belgium as well as from the Commission’s medical service have also been invited to attend. Colleagues from other institutions are more than welcome.

Every year, thousands of women in Europe die from breast cancer, the main cause of mortality in women. One woman out of nine risks to face this cancer during her life. Good prevention and awareness are therefore of vital importance.

You are invited to visit the various stands and talk to representatives of the services and organisations who will be present. A large offer of information on breast cancer prevention will be available to you.
